Sitka is a town and borough in the same U.S. state of Alaska with 8,881 inhabitants (2010). It is the largest city in Ketchikan before the Alexander Archipelago and is located in the western part of Baranof Iceland. With an area of 12,461.4 km ² it is the largest city in the United States by area.
The name Sitka (derived from Sheet'ká, the drawing together of the Tlingit name Shee At'iká) means "people from outside of Shee" = Sheet'-ká X'áat'l (often simply Shee) being the Tlingit name for Baranof Iceland. The city is often referred to as "Sitka-by-the-Sea".
