Liverpool

Liverpool is a city and a metropolitan district in the Merseyside region of England Northwest on the east and north of the estuary of the River Mersey. The city was part of Lancashire until 1974 before the formation of Merseyside. The city was founded in 1207 and achieved city status in 1880. With a population of 435,500 inhabitants is the fourth largest city in the United Kingdom, and the third of England's urban area includes 816,216 inhabitants. Second economic center after London, the city took advantage of its industrial area. Its inhabitants are called Liverpudliens.

The city owes its importance to its port. The progressive silting of the Dee estuary, on which stood the port of Chester since Roman times, allowed Liverpool to become a major port. In the early nineteenth century, 40% of world trade passed through Liverpool, which contributed greatly to the importance of the city.

Multicultural city (it is home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe, and one of the oldest African communities in the country), the city has suffered from industrial decline since the 1970s which it is slowly recovering.
In 2004, several areas of the city obtained the World Heritage status and the city shared the title of European Capital of Culture 2008 with Stavanger to celebrate its 800th anniversary.

The city’s store of superb museums and top-class art galleries – all free – have put paid to the scurrilous rumour that Liverpool peaked with the Beatles: in 2004 the whole of the waterfront and docks was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site because there are more listed buildings here than in any other city in England except London.

Associated witht popularity of the Beatles, one of the greatest phenomena of the recording industry worldwide, Liverpool is a major tourist destination.

The city is also an important university center, and is also famous for its two major football clubs, Everton and Liverpool that evolve both at the highest levels of British and European.

And then, of course, the nightlife: as rich and varied as you’d expect from a good northern city.
